Three young men died early Saturday after a Swift car hit a stationary canter near Bhagat Singh Colony on the Jalandhar bypass. Police received information about the crash around 6.30am.
The car was severely damaged and rescuers had to work to remove two bodies trapped in the front seats. A third body was thrown onto the road. Witnesses estimated that the car was travelling at very high speed, although the exact speed and circumstances will have to be established through investigation rather than eyewitness recollection alone.
The canter driver was reported to have left the scene. Police removed both vehicles, restored traffic and sent the bodies to the civil hospital for post-mortem examination. The identities of the deceased were still being confirmed when the report was published.
The crash points to several questions beyond the immediate collision: whether the stationary vehicle was properly marked, how fast traffic is managed on the bypass, and whether lighting and emergency response are adequate. A road-safety review should examine all of those conditions instead of assigning the entire explanation to one early allegation.
