Following elections for Hoshiarpur’s 50-member municipal corporation, Praveen Saini was chosen mayor, Surinder Kumar senior deputy mayor and Sandeep Chechi deputy mayor.
The new office-bearers said their priority would be city development and the delivery of essential services. Health Minister Balbir Singh said the state government would support Hoshiarpur’s development and urged the civic leadership to give the city a faster pace of work over the next five years.
The election also brought representation for women and younger members, according to the minister. Representation is an important first step, but residents will measure the corporation through practical results: waste collection, roads, drainage, water, lighting and the handling of complaints.
A useful early programme would publish ward-level priorities, budgets, completion dates and a system for reporting delays. That would turn broad promises of development into a record residents can inspect and compare.
